The recent buzz/excitement of 4G speeds

Published by Shveta Mahadoo at 7:30 AM under Technology

Just a few years after most network providers were able to secure the infrastructure needed for nationwide 3G coverage, the race is now on again for them to upgrade to accommodate 4G data speeds. 4G has become the toast of the moment and it has set the community ablaze with excitement. You must have noticed the wave of 4G adverts and marketing campaigns that have hit the TV and other media. While many were still getting used to the possibilities and options that come with 3G phone, data speeds just went faster with the emergence of 4G. But is 4G really that much faster than 3G and is the public accepting it?

Simply put, 4G is an advanced generation technology that is able to provide connection and data speeds at a rate that is at least two times faster than present 3G. This should translate into a quicker and fuller web experience, plus faster uploads and downloads. To enjoy 4G you will need a compatible 4G device and subscription to a 4G service plan. The HTC Evo 4G was the first 4G phone to be launched in the US in May 2010 by Sprint. Since then the list of 4G phones has been increasing with AT&T and T-Mobile also releasing a couple of 4G phones. For example you can get the HTC Inspire 4G on the AT&T platform, or the Samsung Galaxy S 4G released by T-Mobile or even a HTC Evo Shift 4G by Sprint. There are now over a dozen 4G phones to select from in the US.

With all the marketing and promotional activities surrounding the emergence of 4G, many may wonder if 4G is really worth spending extra for. Is the data speed really that much faster or is it just a marketing gimmick? We did a test using the at three various locations that had 4G coverage. We used a speed test utility to test and compare the speed of internet connection as well as uploading and downloading data using 3G and then 4G platforms. The result of the test showed that connecting to the internet and downloading data with 4G was about seven times faster than 3G, while uploading data with 4G was just about three times faster than 3G speeds. 4G makes transferring data so much easier and faster.

A market survey of 2,100 US adults by the Nielsen Company showed that 83% of the respondents sampled were already aware of 4G and what it is. 71% of them said that had plans to buy a 4G phone within the next 12 months. These results show that the awareness campaign may have paid off as more people are aware of the faster data speeds that 4G can provide and a great percentage are interested in grabbing one for themselves.

As time rolls by, it is expected that 4G coverage provided by the major network providers will spread to cover more cities and locations. However, we likely will have to wait until 2013 before most network providers would be able to provide comprehensive national 4G coverage. Till then we expect more exciting phone model options to be released on the 4G platform and service subscription costs to reduce. For those whose locations already enjoy 4G coverage, it may be wise to get yourself a 4G phone and join the excitement of data speeds at the speed of 4G.

Android versus BlackBerry: Android keeping up with BlackBerry’s Marketability

Published by Shveta Mahadoo at 3:27 PM under Technology

Share

A few years ago, choosing a Smartphone was based on its brand, design and price. It was not long until people started becoming more conscious of their selection. After Apple’s first release of the iPhone, many phone manufacturers followed with their very own Smartphone. Today, two of the leading Smartphone providers are Android and BlackBerry.

Android and BlackBerry have presented today’s mobile enthusiasts with Smartphones that are manageable, strong in security and with growing number of applications. They have met functionality and style: fitting the mobile needs of today’s society. Moreover, while BlackBerry may still be a favorite especially among the business sector, the Android is undeniably keeping up.

Android versus BlackBerry

Android and BlackBerry are two of the best Smartphone providers today. Both offer phones with sleek designs, responsive touch controls, and advance messaging options. Among these two, the BlackBerry has a stronger lead in the business sector, with its design fitting more the needs of those from corporate sectors.

While many still prefer the BlackBerry over other Smartphones out on the market, no one can deny the fact that the Android is gaining audiences and it is growing. In the US, the Android’s marketability has grown from 2.8 percent (2009) to 7.1 percent (first quarter of 2010). So what does Android have to offer that makes it appealing even to the BlackBerry lovers?

Messaging Prowess

BlackBerry’s strength lies in messaging—and this has been hard to beat. Thanks to their BES, BlackBerry gives its users IT support that can synchronize into any office network and retrieve files (and do this all even via email). For those shifting to the Android, getting a competitive emailing service can now be met with Google.

Android’s ability to access Google easily gives users emailing and chatting services in a user-friendly environment. For those who enjoyed chatting via BlackBerry, Google also gives Android users Gtalk that has the ability to be signed on and off (a feature that BlackBerry lacks).

Enjoying Apps and Themes

One of the reasons why people purchase Smartphone is because of the applications—a feature Android wins over BlackBerry. At present, Android has around 150,000 applications from their Android Market. Users can also have their money back if they do not like the application they downloaded. All they need to do is have it uninstalled within the first 24 hours of its purchase.

When it comes to themes BlackBerry offers more options for personalizing phones, however, the advantage of Android themes (though few) is the no-icon-configuration and no-redo-of-widgets in jazzing up the phone.

Which Android Version Fits You?

BlackBerry is in command when it comes to the business arena, but compared to the Android, it is not easily geared to other sectors of society. We all love the BlackBerry’s messaging and personalization prowess, but for those who wish to shift phone providers, these can be met easily using the Android. In addition, consumers may select the type of Android phone they want: Stock Android, Sense and Motoblur.

The Stock Android has a straightforward look and feel. Even with fewer widgets, it allows owners to jazz up their phones. Its simplicity is still favored by many especially with the familiarity it delivers since it was first introduced with G1. The HTC Sense interface for the Android is geared to be more user-friendly. The phone’s functionality can easily be accessed from the phone’s home screen with widgets that suit well every user’s needs. The MotoBlur is more geared toward social networking enthusiast. Users can easily get updates from friends on social networking channel’s widgets made accessible via the phone’s home screen.

Final Say

One of the most notable features current Android releases have is the faster processors they possess. It has become more competitive, one that is speedily catching up with BlackBerry. We, of course, cannot deny BlackBerry’s functionality; however, with new applications and more developments, there is no harm in trying out the Android.
