Cell phones have been integrated in our lives in such a manner that they are not mere tools of calling and receiving messages, however they are irreplaceable tools to manage our lives. Cell phones are our true companions on the road and act as emergency workers. It would not be wrong to say that they act as our bodyguards on the road. We feel safe and touched if we carry our cell phones with us. We can tell about our whereabouts to our dear ones when we are away from them. Our one single message or call can work as a miracle in times of grave emergencies. There are so many instances that have proved how cell phones have saved the lives in ordeal or in severe situations. Here we will share some of the incidents that have saved the cell phone users from critical situations when they were about to die or in great danger. If cell phones had not been with them they would have not been survived or their life history would be different:
1. Belle a 17-pound beagle in Orlando was the first canine recipient to win the VITA Wireless Samaritan Award who used a cell phone to save a life in an emergency. Kevin a weaver who was a severe diabetic patient had trained Belle to bite down on the number 9 on his cell phone contacting 911 in case of emergency. One day his blood sugar had dropped dangerously low and had a seizure and collapsed. Seeing Kevin in critical situation she called 911 and his life was saved.
2. American Dan Woolley of Colorado Springs was caught in the collapse of the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince after the Haiti earthquake struck. He used a medical application he had downloaded and the light from his smart phone to diagnose and treat injuries to his foot and head and to help prevent going into shock. He also used the phone’s camera to map his surroundings and identify a safer location to await rescue, which followed 65 hours after the earthquake. Woolley is now recovering at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. In Woolley’s case, his smart phone app turned him into an amateur medic to help him survive natural disaster.
3. A young Manhattan Thomas Wopat-Moreau, 22, lost control of his BMW sport wagon along the Taconic State Parkway, 40 miles south of Albany, after storming out of a party in East Fish. Missing for more than four days, injured and unable to walk, was miraculously found alive, stranded in an upstate swamp where his car had crash-landed. For four days, as dehydration set in and insects swarmed, Wopat-Moreau survived on swamp water and a gritty determination to live. He also had luck, and his cell phone, on his side. With the help of cell phone records, state police were able to get access to Wopat-Moreau. The phone's signal registered within a 3-mile radius of a cell-phone tower in southern Columbia County, near Taghkanic Lake State Park. Investigators were finally able to narrow their search area, and it paid off shortly. Trooper Ron Cardis noticed what appeared to be faint traces of rubber stuck to a highway guardrail, near the town of Gallatin. He was taken to hospital and his life was saved.
4. This was an incident on August 4 2008, a girl from Elizabeth Baruchi College was kidnapped by a taxi driver and luckily she had a cell phone with her. It was irony of the fact that its battery was almost dead and had only one bar. When after six hours of ordeal she tried to call 911 on a taxi driver who refused to let her out of his car. She had tried to use her debit card to pay for ride, but he claimed his machine was not working. She requested to try again and he began to grow angry with her and child locked all of the doors and sped off. She tried everything she could to unlock the doors. She hit the glass and put her head out through the hole in the glass to tell him to stop the car and he raised his hand to hit her; luckily, she moved away. At this point, she grabbed the phone and called 911. Seeing the situation out of his control, he stopped the car luckily next to the police station on the street with two officers on duty. The officers let her out of the car and you can imagine what would have happened if had she not saved battery power and had her cell phone to call 911.
Now everyone should be agreed with us that how important are cell phones in our lives. We cannot think of a safe life without cell phones. This is the only means of communication and technology which has evolved us. Right and timely use of cell phones can do a wonder in certain situations. So keep loving your cell phones!
