If you’re looking for an international mobile service then look no further than this article where we’ll give you a broad overview of how international GSM cell phones operate along with the different aspects you should take into perspective so you can make the most judicious choice. You will first require a cell phone that is GSM SIM “unlocked” and has a functionality ranging between a minimum 900 and maximum 1800 GSM frequencies. These unlocked GSM cell phones should operate with any prepaid SIM card in different countries such as: Europe, Africa, Asia (except perhaps Japan and South Korea), Australia and New Zealand.

So what exactly is an international cellular phone? An international cell phone is categorized as an unlocked GSM phone that works on a 900 and 1800 frequency. Purchasing a SIM card will give you the advantage of using your international cell phone in areas where there is GSM coverage such as most of continental Europe, Asia, Africa and the Pacific Rim. A world cell phone with a GSM 1900 frequency will extend its coverage to areas such as the United States, Canada and distinct parts of South America. We did use the term “unlocked cell phones” and we’ll broaden your view of how they can operate in different destinations. Unlocked cellular phones are fantastic in that they can be utilized on various GSM frequencies all over the US, Europe and Asia.

These international GSM mobile phones (call them, world phones if you will) can function in the United States in conjunction with a North American GSM carrier. While traveling overseas you can use your unlocked cellular phone with European/Asian/Latin American GSM carriers. You must beforehand ensure that you have international roaming service or local prepaid minutes with a US carrier to avail of this service. If you’re looking for a cell phone that will work both in the US and abroad, then all you need is to sign a contract with a wireless cell phone carrier that provides GSM service in the United States. One of the major GSM service providers in the US is T-mobile which offers fantastic coverage.

One of the chief assets of international GSM cell phones is undoubtedly higher digital voice quality in addition to the splendid advantage of using prepaid GSM cellular phones worldwide without paying expensive roaming charges!! Now that’s a deal. All unlocked GSM cellular phones work with a 900, 1800 or 1900 band SIM card without forcing you into a specific contract. Important to note here: your cell phone should be a tri band phone for international use on GSM networks in countries that utilize the 900 and/or 1800 Mhz frequencies. All prepaid cell phones that are unlocked can be used by inserting a SIM card enabled for international roaming. These are available by major wireless carriers such as T-mobile.

Now, let’s talk about the important points you should bear in mind before buying a world cell phone.

A brief recap of the important features in an international cell phone:

  • Your cell phone should be a tri-band (900/1800/1900 Mhz) or quad-band GSM phone
  • The battery charger must be “dual voltage”. It needs to operate on all voltages from about 110V to 240V and on frequencies between 50-60Hz.
  • Your cell phone needs to be unlocked to function with any SIM card so that it can operate worldwide.
  • Purchase a cellular phone with a Lithium-Ion type battery- It is of better-quality in contrast to Nickel metal hydride batteries. Beware! Don’t buy a cellular phone with an old fashioned Nickel-Cadmium battery otherwise it will run out of juice and you will be stranded!

Well, what you waiting for? Get yourself an international GSM cell phone today and become a world traveler!!
