Since IBM designed the first Smartphone in 1992, called Simon, the never ending inventions for cell phones keep happening at dizzying speeds and this is due largely to the curiosity and fascination masses have for cellular phones. It would not be wrong to say that mobile industry has changed the outlook of the modern world such that it’s hard to keep up with the frenzied inventions taking place.

The question then becomes, how did smartphones come into being? After cell phones, came the PDAs (personal digital assistants). Initially cell phones were only used to make calls, whereas PDA’s were used as personal portable organizers. Gradually PDAs gained wireless connectivity and were able to send and receive e-mail. Cell phones eventually gained messaging capabilities. In no time PDA and cellular phones both added each other’s features, and the subsequent marriage resulted in the Smartphone as we know it today.

What is the origin of the name “Smartphone?

  •  A smart phone will be based on a particular operating system that allows it to run productivity applications. The different operating systems are Windows Mobile phone OS, Google’s Android, Symbian OS, RIM’s blackberry, Palm’s Web OS and Linux.
  • As compared to other cell phones Smart phones rely more heavily on Software. They include an address book or some sort of contact manager. It may allow viewing, creating and editing Microsoft Office documents. It may assist you to download applications or edit photos. Smart phones are useful in locating maps, creating playlists of digital tunes etc.
  • Most of the Smart phones are primarily concerned with the speed of Web Access. In the present world, we want everything to happen instantly so accordingly, our messages and applications should travel at blazing speeds as well. The Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G and now 4G all fulfill the desires, expectations and demands of the masses. You can use your Smartphone to browse your favorite sites and do just about anything else!
  • Smart phones consist of a QWERTY Keyboard. The keyboard can be hardware (physical keys) or software (like on a touch screen)
  • All cell phones can send and receive text messages. Apart from handling e-mails, a Smartphone can sync with your personal as well your professional accounts. Some smart phones can support multiple e-mail accounts. Others can access popular instant messaging services, like AOL's AIM and Yahoo! Messenger.

There could be some other features of a Smart phone that make a Smartphone smart” indeed. But the technology surrounding smart phones and cell phones is constantly changing. What constitutes a Smartphone today may change by tomorrow, next week or next month! We live in a world of constant technological innovation!

This era, it seems, belongs to those Android smartphones. Each carrier today is including Android system in its cell phone and the arrival of the 4G network with more advanced Android 2.2 has totally revolutionized the mobile industry. So what comes next? Let’s see and get tuned!
