Let’s start with the definition of a SIM card and what an unlocked GSM phone is.
Usually, a cell phone service provider will provide you with a cellular phone which has a unique serial number to enable the cell phone service provider track and manage the self-identification of customers. The wireless cell phone carrier detects the identified serial number in your mobile phone and diverts your incoming and outgoing calls to your cell phone.
Owning a GSM cell phone doesn’t entail that you are the sole proprietor of the phone. In fact, a GSM phone has a detachable account called a SIM (Subscriber information module) which has a prescribed serial number. This SIM identifies you to the wireless carrier service. We’ll extrapolate in a bit but essentially, you can insert your SIM into any compatible cell phone (The latest GSM phones are compatible with various SIM cards) and use it with any wireless company. You become the great owner once the wireless service provider recognizes your SIM card! So let’s come to the exciting part.

As it is commonly known, you can insert any SIM in an unlocked GSM phone and utilize it no matter how expensive it is. What’s more, you can easily switch GSM service providers without changing your beloved cellular phone. All you need to do is to replace the original company’s SIM with your new service provider’s SIM card (easy!). On the other hand, some wireless service providers “lock” their cell phone which means that their cellular phones will only work with their designated SIM cards. So where does that leave us? The answer is simple; you need to unlock your cellular phone so that it can function with any SIM card.
But the question then becomes, how do I unlock my cell phone? There are two ways in which your cellular phone can be unlocked. You can be really lucky to own a GSM phone which can be unlocked by simply entering a secret code into it. This code is a specific number for that related cell phone based on its serial number (known as its IMEI) along with the service provider which locked it. The second part, there are diverse cell phones which require “firmware”-their operating system software to remove the lock. This procedure involves the connection of the cell phone to a distinct programming unit through a data cable.
It’s not necessary to unlock a cell phone whenever a SIM card is changed.
Once you’ve unlocked your cell phone it in reality becomes permanently “unlocked”. There are special cases where you can choose to program the lock code back into the phone but in most cases, it’s a done deal! The existing mobile phone service will still work with the unlocked cell phone, perfectly. You can use your unlocked GSM cell phone with your existing service without changing your SIM card.
However, an unlocked GSM cell phone will not provide improved reception and roaming in the US. Unlocking your cell phone will not affect your present status with your wireless mobile phone carrier. The only difference is you can remove the original SIM and replace it with a SIM card from another wireless company.
It may be possible to save money with an unlocked GSM phone. Your current wireless service provider will charge the same rates or fees on all your calls. But now that your cellular phone is unlocked it will enable you to utilize a different SIM from another provider which might give cheaper rates for example if when traveling abroad.
