What is exciting about a Wi-Fi technology in a mobile phone

The world is rapidly shrinking owing to the rapid advances and the innovative technologies being spun out incessantly. The cell phone industry is no exception and it has experienced drastic changes over a short span of time, thanks to renewed interest from the scientific community. Wi-Fi technology is one such system that is at the forefront of technology allowing mobile users to connect to the web wirelessly and seamless, it is thus very effective for those who travel frequently — without such technology, it is conceivable the corporate world would come to a grinding halt!

What is the origin of the term “Bluetooth?”

Wi-Fi stands for “wireless fidelity” literally named after an older term Hi-Fi, which as you guessed, was the acronym used for High Fidelity. Wi-Fi is wireless networking technology, which spans and is used across the globe. This system was developed first by the institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. In August 1999 it was commercially used by a trade group called Interbrand corporation.

What exactly is Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is wireless technology that is built-in the cell phones so they can be used in places and location where placement of physical cables may not be possible. In order to provide world-class services to the very large number of mobile users found in places, which are without wires, a local area network is developed for such purposes and devices. To remain competitive and relevant in the marketplace, all major mobile companies are trying to build in Wi-Fi technology in their standard budget phones, thereby elevating the mobile phone from a mere device for making calls to an indispensable gadget which is a true technological marvel.

How Wi-Fi works

Wi-Fi technology uses radio waves for communication at a frequency of 2.4GHz. The radio waves are transmitted from antennas and routers and are picked up by cell phones equipped with Wi-Fi cards. When the cell phone receives a signal within the range of a Wi-Fi network, the Wi-Fi card then reads the signals and produces an internet connection without a cord i.e. wirelessly. Once a connection is established between user and the network, the user will be prompted with a login screen and password if it is fee or service-based.

A Wi-Fi capable phone not only has the basic standard features such as making calls, sending text messages and receiving voicemail etc. but it has greater data retrieval capabilities and wider internet access that is faster and more reliable.

How widespread are WI-Fi and Bluetooth?

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are two different technologies, which are not superimposable. Wi-Fi is intended for resident equipment and its applications and can be a replacement for cables for general area network access in work areas. On the other hand, Bluetooth is intended for non-resident equipment and its applications. Bluetooth is a replacement for cables in a variety of personal carrier applications in any environment. Wi-Fi transfers data at high speed and range whereas Bluetooth requires less power. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth both uses different protocols and frequencies and the logic upon which they are based is radically different.

Limitations

Many phones shut of the Wi-Fi connection when not in use to conserve energy, which is laudable but also results in the missing of sometimes important calls. The mobile user cannot roam between hotspot with his phone and still receive Wi-Fi calls with his phone. These are not critical problems by any means, and will most likely be resolved pretty soon by the millions of dollars being poured for research in the field of telecommunications.
