We are living in a revolutionized world where information travels at blazing speed and cell phones are an integral part of communication, to the point that lives without these devices seems unimaginable. The cell phone industry sees more innovation and inventions than in other industry or area of business. Bluetooth technology is one such development that has eased and sweetened the lives of mobile phone users.

How/where did the term “BLUETOOTH” originate?

Bluetooth was developed initially by telecoms vendor Ericsson in 1994 to overcome the problems of synchronization they were facing. The name Bluetooth was derived from the name of tenth century king Harald Blatand who had reunited the various groups of different tribes which were at war in Denmark and Norway and was famous for helping people to communicate. Ericsson, by virtue

of developing a wireless protocol named after a pacifist, reuniting “king” Bluetooth, aimed to do the same by simplifying the interconnectivity of devices such as cell phones, headset, earpiece, digital camera and computer.

What is BLUETOOTH?

In the beginning, it was a small cheap radio chip plugged into a computer printer or mobile phone but as the electronic industry evolved over time, a brand new concept was being toyed with: the idea of having universal device to unite different communication devices. It was felt there was a need for it and the timing was right the market would welcome such a product. Bluetooth is essentially, a window protocol, a method by which devices can communicate without any physical connection such as cables. It simplifies the interconnectivity of devices and provides a safe way to connect and exchange data between disparate devices such as faxes, mobile, phones, printers, GPS, digital camera and much more.

How it works.

Bluetooth uses radio frequencies in the 2.45 GHz range to transmit information over short distances of generally 33 feet or less.

If a user has built-in Bluetooth technology in their mobile phone, it becomes possible to transfer data (including digital music, videos etc..) to other devices such as a PC or other mobile phone provided the other devices have Bluetooth capabilities. A user can use Bluetooth USB in his PC or laptop to have the connectivity of Bluetooth.

If a user wants to communicate with other devices, then he/she needs to enter the same passcode to both the devices desired for communication.

Are Wi-Fi and Bluetooth commonly used?

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both radio technologies but they are different in frequencies and protocols. Wi-Fi is a replacement for cabling for general area network access in work areas. On the other hand, Bluetooth is a replacement for cables in a variety of personal carrier applications in any environments.

Precautions

Those having mobile phones with Bluetooth technology may face what is commonly referred to as “bluejacking” which amounts to sending unsolicited messages over the Bluetooth network. Software has been developed for the safety of users, however users are advised to turn off the Bluetooth when not in use. In addition, user must be wary and careful when setting a device to “trusted” or “authorized” as the latter can easily access all of the user’s device services and features.
